Bikies need to sit down and talk Tate

The Gold Coast’s new mayor wants outlaw motorcycle gangs to sit down and talk through their differences “like good corporate citizens”.

Mayor-elect Tom Tate’s comments come after a 26-year-old Victorian man was arrested on Tuesday for shooting two people, including an innocent woman Server 2003 Key, in a Gold Coast shopping centre.

The incident has been linked to increasing friction between the Hell’s Angels and Bandidos motorcycle gangs.

Mr Tate Office Visio Key, who made his name as a prominent Gold Coast businessman Windows 7 Key, told AAP the warring clubs should settle their differences once and for all by meeting like industry groups would during a dispute.

“Have yourselves a forum, meet up, mediate, talk and find a solution,” he said.

“If you can’t do that, then you’re not really up to the corporate standard.

“If they want to be treated like good corporate citizens, they need to behave like one.”

Mr Tate had already vowed to crack down on businesses associated with gangs by ensuring they comply with every building code and safety regulation or be shut down.

He said the council would also publicly name and shame businesses associated with gangs so residents could choose whether they would support them.

Are We Throwing Away Our Future

The cuts to services for young people being planned and implemented throughout the Country are severe and disproportionate and we will eventually pay a price for it. Tattoo Machines And Supplies

In Derbyshire for instance there are plans to close 29 youth clubs; in Somerset they are planning cuts of up to 71% to youth services whilst in West Berkshire the Council are also making major cuts to their youth services. I believe this reflects what is happening in many areas of the UK. The bad news does not stop there because there are major cuts in support from central Government to the charities that support young people. It seems the attack on services for young people is from every direction. It is ironic (but not at all funny) that the third sector – the charities – are suffering this way since they are surely a part of the Prime Ministers ‘big society’ but since he has since declared society to be ‘broken’ we might question the value of these sound bites and set aside any assumption that the ‘big society’ idea is anything more than something you say after announcing cuts.

All the main parties agree that we need to make cuts but national and local government cuts are disproportionately effecting the most vulnerable. I would be interested to see if the proportion of cuts to highway budgets match those to the Youth Services up and down the land. I suspect they do not – there are votes in doing things to the roads – making junctions bigger – putting down more yellow lines and just moving things around generally. Work on roads to make them safe and to repair big holes is one thing but I question much of the rest of the current spending when other cuts are so severe. Of course there are not so many votes in keeping open a youth club or an outreach worker supporting otherwise disengaged young people. Reduce the voting age to 16 and then I suspect any future cuts would be a bit more proportionate – even if only a minority of 16 and 17 year olds voted. Of course the point is the ones who need these services the most come from families who are struggling and are less likely to vote – so it’s a ‘no brainer’ for astute politicians.

Just in case young people thought there was some good news somewhere they should be mindful that the press don’t like them much – at least they don’t like young men. Most press reports refer to young men in a negative way using words such as ‘thugs’ ‘yobs’ and ‘feral’. I don’t suppose the authors of these articles are referring to anyone in their own families of course – its other people’s children they are thinking of – and they can shift a few more newspapers doing it. Only if a young person dies are they more likely to receive a kinder press – that’s a tough audience for people just starting their lives.

Is there not something somewhere in our culture that recognises that we do owe a duty to young people – that we should not demonise them and treat them a tribe apart? They are our future workers, leaders and voters Tattoo Machine Parts, and even if they are born into areas where they are more likely to be on benefits than work, we should at least try to give them a sense that there could be more in their lives.

It is madness to neglect them and demonise them the way we do. Close the youth clubs and where will young people go? They will hang around on the streets – to be with the friends and to socialise and yes some of them will misbehave and the police will be called and, and even if they have done nothing wrong, they will be ‘moved on’ – but to where? Don’t misunderstand my position here – if young people do something wrong then there should be consequences and a tiny minority of them are bad – just like us so called grown- ups Tattoo Kits On Sale! Stick more adults on the streets and see what they get up to! If young people go to youth clubs then they will have to learn to play by the rules even if they do not learn this anywhere else. If an outreach worker can talk to a young person who would otherwise be causing someone else problems then there is at least a chance that they will think about what they are doing.

What message are we sending to them about our values? Clearly we do not value them – that much is clear and why should they care about a society that cares nothing for them?

Google Says Forced “Sharing” Is a Bug, Not a Fea

Google is offering publishers a new tool that lets them force users to “share” a story before they read it themselves.

That can’t be right Custom Tattoo Machine, can it?

Not exactly. That scenario is what Gawker’s Scott Kidder encountered when he read a story on Adweek’s site today, but that’s not what’s supposed to happen.

Instead, Kidder should have had a choice of filling out a one- or two-question survey or sharing the story on Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

Bug, not a feature, says a Google spokesrep, via email:

Generally, Google Consumer Surveys are designed to show a market research question along with an alternate, publisher defined action, such as signing in or sharing a piece of content. Along with the surveys, we also offer a number of controls to prevent abuse of the system. Unfortunately, in rare cases, as a result of these controls, a prompt runs without a survey question included. This is not the intended behavior and we are currently working on a fix.

[UPDATE: This is now fixed, a Google rep says.]

Okay Glitter Tattoo Kits, fair enough. As far as the survey that AdWeek users are supposed to see, which acts as an ersatz pay wall by generating a small fee for AdWeek and Google every time someone fills it out: Annoying and a little clumsy, but not terrible.

I’ve read about the tool, and I’ve used it several times, but each time I encounter it I think something’s broken on the site. Then I remember what’s happening, make a couple of clicks without giving it a lick of thought — today’s survey was about professional medical supplies, I think, but I really have no idea — and move on.

Hard to see how this is useful for the survey sponsor, but I’ve always found online sponsor polls to be baffling. So perhaps it’s a less-bad option.

In any case Best Tattoo Guns, it’s a couple of clicks, so I’d prefer that to having Adweek crap up their site with slideshows, or forcing me to make lots of clicks to read a one-page story, which happens all over the Web these days. I also prefer it to Facebook’s “frictionless sharing” via “social readers,” which end up automatically belching up my friends’ reading habits into my feed, whether or not either of us wanted that to happen.

And in the big picture, unless the site you like is using the “borrow money from investors, pay back by selling to Facebook” plan, you’re always going to end up paying something to use it.

Either you pull out your credit card, or you lend them your eyeballs so they can rent them out to advertisers. And if you don’t like those options, you’re going to end up with a much emptier Web.

China April trade data casts doubt on rebound

BEIJING Herve Leger sale, May 10, 2012 (Reuters) — China’s headline growth in imports unexpectedly stalled in April and exports were weaker-than-expected, raising doubts about the strength of the rebound in the world’s second-biggest economy.

The trade data on Thursday was the first of a flurry of economic indicators to be released this week – inflation, producer prices, industrial output, fixed asset investment and retail sales are all due on Friday – which had been expected to show a month-on-month improvement in both foreign and domestic demand.

“Both export and import figures gave the market a downside surprise,” said Jiang Chao, an analyst at Guotai Junan Securities, in Shanghai.

“We had expected China’s export growth to reach a trough by the end of the second quarter, but now I think we will have to revise down our trade forecast for the full year.”

Annual growth in imports last month was just 0.3 percent, far below expectations for an 11 percent increase in a Reuters poll and also weaker than the 5.3 percent year-on-year rise in March. However, the slowdown in headline imports was magnified by a sharp fall in commodities prices in the past year.

Exports were also softer than expected, growing by 4.9 percent in April from a year earlier, compared with a forecast of 8.5 percent and March’s rise of 8.9 percent.

That left the country with a trade surplus of $18.4 billion in April, compared with a forecast of $8.5 billion and March’s $5.35 billion. Commerce Minister Chen Deming said last week that the April trade surplus would be around $10 billion.

Trade figures from the second quarter tend to give a clearer picture of the emerging trend for the year, given the volatility in first-quarter numbers distorted annually by shifts in the Lunar New Year holidays.

Asian shares fell after the data and the Australian dollar, sensitive to expected demand from the biggest market for the country’s commodities, pared gains made after strong local jobs data.

SLOWDOWN BITES

Hurt by a recession in Europe and a patchy economic recovery in the United States – China’s two biggest trading partners -export growth has slumped to single-digit levels this year, a long way from growth of more than 20 percent seen in 2010.

To cope with the slowdown, China has tilted policy away from containing inflation and towards supporting growth. Beijing has been aiming for its total trade to grow at an average annual pace of 10 percent in the years between 2011 and 2015.

China has followed a program of “fine-tuning” of economic policy since the autumn, tweaking taxes and license fees and cutting the amount of cash banks are required to hold in reserves to keep credit creation in line with the official 14 percent target for money supply growth.

Despite those efforts, China is still likely to see its slowest year of economic growth in a decade in 2012 Discount BCBG Dresses, according to the consensus forecast of 8.4 percent.

“I’m very surprised by the data … It’s hard to say that Q1 is the trough,” said Jianguang Shen, chief economist at Mizuho Securities Asia in Hong Kong.

“If the government does not relax policies further, all factors that dragged growth down in the first three months will still remain in the second quarter.

China’s manufacturers had shown signs of improvement in April, with export orders ticking up and output gathering pace among bigger plants in the country’s vast factory sector, according to surveys of purchasing managers last week.

But the just-concluded Canton Fair, a bi-annual export trade fair widely considered a barometer of China’s export growth, saw the value of signed export deals shrink 2.3 percent from a year ago, the first annual drop since the global financial crisis, which has fanned worries over the strength of world demand.

China’s export sector dragged on the economy in the first quarter of 2012, with net exports subtracting 0.8 percentage points from GDP, which grew at its slowest annual rate in nearly three years at 8.1 percent.

Do Monkeys Get Cold Sores

One of two macaques captured by authorities Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, a day after their owned released dozens of wild animals and then killed himself near Zanesville, Ohio

Dozens of exotic animals, including 18 Bengal tigers, 17 lions, two grizzly bears, and a wolf ran loose in Zanesville, Ohio, Tuesday night, leaving schools closed the following day and many residents staying indoors. Around 50 animals were hunted down and either killed or captured, but one runaway macaque monkey remained at large. Authorities warned residents to keep their distance from the monkey out of fear that it may be carrying the herpes B virus, which can be deadly in humans. How does a monkey get herpes?

Monkey business. Nonhuman primates can become infected with herpes through biting, scratching, and having sex. Monkeys don’t kiss like humans do, but casual social behaviors such as touching nose-to-mouth and grooming can also spread the disease. While herpes B can be found in monkeys of all ages, it is most common among sexually active adults.

In monkeys, herpes B behaves almost exactly the same way that herpes simplex, the everyday human variety of herpes, behaves in humans. Most infected monkeys show no symptoms—which also means that they’re less contagious—but they may occasionally experience cold sores around the mouth or genital area. Just as in humans, once the virus enters the body, it never leaves.

Herpes B isn’t prevalent in all monkeys, but it’s endemic among macaques. Outside of captivity, these monkey species—which include rhesus monkeys, snow monkeys, and Barbary monkeys (sometimes referred to as Barbary apes)—live only in Africa and Asia. Herpes is not common among the monkeys of Central and South America. Among adult macaques in the lab, herpes seems to have infected more than half of all animals.

Monkeys can transmit herpes B to humans through all the same means with which they can infect one another—a bite, a scratch, a splash of saliva—or, in a laboratory setting Tattoo Supplies, via an accidental scrape from a contaminated needle. While herpes B is relatively harmless among monkeys, among humans it can cause vomiting, headache, loss of motor control, and, eventually, infection of the central nervous symptom. Experts have documented at least 26 cases of herpes B infection in humans, at least 16 of which resulted in death. If left untreated, the estimated mortality rate is 80 percent.

Bonus Explainer: Are STDs common in the animal kingdom? Yes. Chlamydia is widespread among koalas, and is one of the reasons the species is threatened with extinction. HIV-like viruses have also been found among chimpanzees, and most scientists believe that HIV originated in other primates. Perhaps the most common STD among nonhuman animals is brucellosis, which affects many different animals including cattle Tattoo Supplies, sheep, goats, pigs, deer, and dogs. In 1954, Brucella (the bacteria responsible for brucellosis) became the first agent of biological warfare weaponized by the United States. The program was later discontinued.
